August foreclosures down in Lee, up in Collier
Foreclosure activity slowed in Lee County in August. In Collier County, it increased a bit.
A report by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac shows 4,133 foreclosure related filings — or one for every 88 households _ last month in Lee. That was down more than 26 percent from July.
In Collier, there were 1,137 filings, or one for every 169 households. That was up 3.08 percent from July.
The report tracks default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions. Default notices are new filings. There were 791 of them in Collier last month and 1,799 in Lee last month, according to RealtyTrac.
Charlotte County had 651 total filings, or one for every 154 households. That was up more than 12 percent from July.
Of the total filings in Charlotte, 402 were default notices, or new filings. Cape Coral-Fort Myers ranked ninth in the country for its foreclosure activity last month. Naples-Marco Island came in 25th.
Nationally, foreclosure-related filings were reported on 358,471 U.S. properties last month, according to RealtyTrac. That was down 1 percent from July, but up 18 percent from August 2008.
One in every 357 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing last month.
“The August report demonstrates that there is still an ample supply of properties filling the foreclosure pipeline,” said James J. Saccacio, RealtyTrac’s CEO, in a statement.
After hitting a high for the year in July bank repossessions, or REOs, dropped 13 percent last month, he noted. At the same time, he said, there was a “record high number of properties either entering default or being scheduled for a public foreclosure auction for the first time.”
Nevada continued to have the nation’s highest foreclosure rate in August, with one in every 62 households getting a filing. Florida came in second, with one in every 140 households receiving one of the three notices followed by RealtyTrac.
Other states ranking in the top 10 for their foreclosure rates last month were California, Arizona, Michigan, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Georgia and Illinois.
Las Vegas had the highest number of filings last month for metro areas with a population of at least 200,000. Filings were reported on 14,940 properties. That’s one for every 53 households, more than 6.7 times the national average.
Stockton, Calif., posted the nation’s second highest foreclosure rate for metros.
In Florida, Orlando-Kissimmee also made the top 10 list for its foreclosure activity. It was at No. 8, with one in every 87 households getting a notice.
