But there is also a thriving arts and culture scene, with opera, dance, film and theatre all available to enjoy.
One of Naples’ theatre companies, The Naples Players, has been entertaining residents since 1953, when a group of friends performed I Remember Mama at the then Naples’ High School.
Over the years The Naples Players have gone from strength to strength, gaining more and more members and performing plays and musical over the years.
In 1998, after a major fundraising drive, The Naples Players were able to move into The Sugden Community Theatre on 5th Avenue South. Their first performance there was Me and My Girl.
Today The Naples Players stage more than 220 performances a year, all of which continue to be very popular.
The quality of their productions and the talent of the cast and crew have been rewarded – The Naples Players have been voted Best Live Theatre for ten consecutive years in the Naples Daily News Southwest Florida Choice Awards.
The Naples Players and the Sugden Theatre also run a youth theatre and theatre education program called KidzAct.
In the early 2000s The Naples Players decided to initiate a program that would help children and young adults aged between 4 and 18 gain skills in voice, dance improvisation and acting.
The theatre classes and productions have proved to be incredibly popular. In 2007 KidzAct started an outreach program where members performed plays in schools that did not have any type of theatre facilities.
The program also runs a scholarship scheme based on individual applicant’s financial needs. This summer, head over to Blackburn Hall and check out The Naples Player’s in Stephen Sondheim’s Gypsy, a classic American musical about Momma Rose and her determination to make her two daughters into stars.
